Set up Internal and External Transfers

Conveniently move money to and from eligible accounts. You can transfer funds between your eligible accounts at City National or other banks with City National Online® or the City National Bank App®.

Before you can initiate an internal transfer, your Relationship Manager will need to set up this capability for your accounts.

Internal transfers from a web browser

Types of personal accounts that you can transfer between:

  • Demand Deposit Accounts (DDAs)
  • Interest Checking Accounts
  • Money Market Accounts (MMAs)
  • Savings Accounts
  • Brokerage Accounts
  • Loans – Transfers to loan accounts are considered payments

There is no transaction limit for internal transfers other than the available account balance.

Internal transfers are credited the same day if completed by 10:00 p.m. PT / 1:00 a.m. ET.

To get started with an internal transfer, please sign in to City National Online and complete the following steps:

  1. On the Account Summary screen, select Payments & Transfers, then Transfer Funds.
  2. Select From and To accounts from the drop downs, enter the transfer amount, select the frequency and select Continue.
  3. Review the transfer details and select Submit transfer, Edit or Cancel.

External transfers from a web browser

Move money between your eligible accounts at City National Bank and your accounts at other banks.1 You can initiate an external transfer from a Demand Deposit Account (DDA), Interest Checking Account, Money Market Account (MMA) and Savings Account. Please note:

  • The External Transfer dollar limit is $25,000 either as an aggregate total of inbound and outbound transfers for the day or as a single transfer per day. To increase your External Transfer limit over $25,000 please contact your Relationship Manager.
  • Transfers made before 4:00 p.m. PT / 7:00 p.m. ET on a business day will be processed immediately and posted to the external account within two business days. External transfer requests received after this time, or on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays will be processed on the next business day.
  • External accounts must be validated through a micro-deposit verification process.

To get started with an external transfer, please sign in to City National Online:

  1. On the Account Summary screen, select Payments & Transfers, then Transfer Funds.
  2. Select Make an external transfer on the left menu.
  3. Select From and To accounts from the drop downs, select the date, enter the transfer amount and select Continue.
  4. Review the transfer details and select Submit transfer, Edit or Cancel.

Transfer money on the City National Bank App

  1. From the Account Summary screen, select Move Money, then Make Account Transfers.
  2. Choose the funding account and the receiving account.
  3. Enter the amount of your transfer.
  4. If this is an external transfer, select a date (up to two years in advance) to send the transfer.
  5. Slide the control to the right to process your transfer.
 



All transfers are subject to available funds.

To request the option to make transfers to and from your accounts, go to Customer Service and select "Contact us". In your instructions, please include the full account numbers as well as the exact direction of the transfer relationship: to, from, or if requesting transfers both ways.

To change a scheduled transfer, please ensure that you make the change prior to 10:00 p.m. PT the night before the date of the transfer.

For a loan or line of credit account, if you make an additional payment, your payment may be applied to the current amount due, to unpaid interest and then to principal, held in suspense for application to a future scheduled payment, to your next scheduled payment or to the principal balance of your loan or line, depending upon the type of loan or line you have. If you wish to make a payment to reduce principal, please contact your City National Banker at (800) 773-7100, option zero.

A transfer you schedule for today in a repeating transfer series will be processed the next business day. Remaining transfers in the series will be processed according to the schedule you specify. If you want a transfer processed today, use the one-time transfer feature.

City National Bank App requires that you download the City National Bank App and is only available for select mobile devices. Requires setup in City National Online. Data connection required. Message and data rates may apply.
