Manage Authorized Users on a Credit Card

An authorized user is someone who has been added to a credit card account by a primary or joint account holder. Authorized users can conduct transactions but aren’t responsible for any payments on the credit card account.

Add or remove an authorized user

If you would like to add or remove an authorized user, contact your Relationship Manager. There are no restrictions on the number of authorized users on a credit card account.

To add an authorized user, you will need to provide the following details of the authorized user:

  • Full Legal Name
  • Legal Physical Address 
  • Phone Number 
  • Social Security Number 
  • Date of Birth
  • Citizenship Status 
  • Occupation and Employment Information

Set a spending limit for an authorized user

The spending limit is either the full amount of credit available under the account, or the spending limit set by any account holder for an authorized user.

If you would like to adjust the spending limit of an authorized user, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to City National Online®.
  2. On the Account Summary page, select the credit card account that has the authorized user.
  3. Select “Set Spending Limits.”
  4. Choose an account.
  5. In the Spending Limits section, find the authorized user and edit their spending limit.
  6. Select “Save Changes.”
  7. The system will provide a confirmation that the new spending limit has been saved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a fee to add an authorized user?

There is no fee to add an authorized user to a credit card account, with the exception of the City National Crystal® Visa Infinite® Credit Card. There is a $95 additional card fee upon issuance and annually thereafter for each card issued after the first card.2

Will my authorized user get their own card?

Yes, each authorized user will receive their own card. 

Can an authorized user have an online account?

Yes, an authorized user can enroll in City National Online using their card number.

What information can an authorized user access?

An authorized user can only access information about their own card. They will not have access to information about any other credit card holder.
