What do the Broadway shows “Death of a Salesman,” “Giant,” and “Schmigadoon!” have in common?
Each was featured prominently at Sunday’s 79th annual Tony Awards, and all are clients of City National Bank.
“Schmigadoon!,” which pokes fun at musical comedies, won the Tony for best new musical; “Death of a Salesman” won for best play revival; and in “Giant,” John Lithgow won best actor for his portrayal of the famous children’s book author Roald Dahl.
The Tony Awards ceremony is held every year at Radio City Music Hall in New York City to recognize outstanding actors, performers and productions. In addition, one award is set aside for a regional theatre company that exhibits sustained artistic achievement and impact on national theater growth.
JaHan Wang, executive vice president and head of Entertainment & Sports Banking at City National, joined actress Carrie Coon in presenting the Regional Theatre Tony Award to American Players Theatre (APT) in Spring Green, Wisconsin, along with a $25,000 check.
Coon, who received a Tony Award nomination for her role in “Bug,” spent four years at APT, now in its 47th season staging Shakespeare and other high-quality plays in rural Wisconsin.
“The Tony awards bring together the very best of Broadway and create an opportunity to celebrate the artists, productions, and creative teams whose work continues to inspire,” Wang said. “We’re honored to be known as the bank of Broadway and have the deepest respect for impact this community has on our culture and the entertainment industry at large.”
City National has served as the official bank of the Tony Awards for 12 straight years and offers services such as payroll processing for more than 60% of the shows currently running on Broadway. Past theatre clients have included “Hamilton,” “Wicked,” and “Moulin Rouge.”
A highlight of the sponsorship is the First Impressions Cam which features interviews with Tony winners moments after they step off stage – giving them a chance to share their immediate reactions to the experience. Last year, the social media series was nominated for a Webby Award. This year, the interviews were hosted by Jordan Fisher, who is currently starring in the off-Broadway revival of Little Shop of Horrors.
“The theater gives so much joy to so many people,” Wang said. “It’s an honor to be able to play a small role in this community.”
