John Bai is executive vice president and chief financial officer of City National Bank. Mr. Bai oversees the finance, accounting and treasury functions, as well as asset and liability management, corporate development, insurance, corporate real estate, and banking operations and investment services.
Mr. Bai also is a member of the company’s Executive Committee and its Strategy and Planning Committee. He reports to City National CEO Kelly Coffey and Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) CFO Rod Bolger.
Mr. Bai has more than 25 years of financial services experience. Prior to joining City National, he was president and CEO of RBC Direct Investing, where he managed Canada’s second-largest online brokerage. Before that, he led RBC’s Wealth Management Finance division, overseeing teams in Canada, the United Kingdom, Singapore and Hong Kong. He also led RBC’s Enterprise Performance Management team. Earlier in his career, he worked as director in RBC’s Strategy and Corporate Development group. Outside of RBC, he spent nine years as a senior portfolio manager at Fiera Capital Corporation. Mr. Bai also worked at Credit Suisse First Boston in equity research and began his career as an accountant with PwC.
Mr. Bai currently serves as chair of the CODE Inc. Foundation Board, which supports Canada’s leading international development agency focused uniquely on education and literacy. He is a member of the User Advisory Council of the Accounting Standards Board and is a Chartered Financial Analyst® and Chartered Accountant. He was previously a board member of RBC Direct Investing and RBC Holdings (Channel Islands) Limited.
