How is my check card different from an ATM card?
The check card has a Visa logo, which allows you to use your check card at millions of locations worldwide, such as grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, and for hotels and travel. When you use your check card, the funds are automatically deducted from your checking account and the purchase transaction details are printed on your statement.

How can I use my Check Card?
The check card allows you the convenience to get cash and make purchases, instead of writing checks. Specifically, you can use your check card to:

  • Get cash at any City National ATM or any ATM displaying the STAR SYSTEM® or Plus® logo
  • Purchase goods and services wherever Visa debit cards are accepted
  • Establish automatic or recurring bill payments with participating merchants1. Call the merchant and give them your check card number.
  • Check account balances
  • Make deposits at deposit-enabled City National Bank ATMs
  • Transfer money between linked City National Bank accounts

How is my check card different from a credit card?
When you use your check card, the transaction is deducted from your City National Bank checking account. A credit card transaction will incur interest charges if not paid at the end of the monthly billing cycle.

Will I have to pay interest charges?
Check cards are not credit cards, so you have no interest charges associated with its use. However, if you have an overdraft protection line of credit attached to your checking account, interest will accrue when you use your check card to access your overdraft line.

What are PIN and Signature purchases?
PIN purchases are transactions which require you to enter your Personal Identification Number (PIN).

Signature purchases are transactions where you select "credit" or authorize the purchases with your signature instead of using your PIN.

Can I choose between Signature and PIN purchases?
Your options may differ depending on the merchant. Some merchants may require a signature (such as many restaurants), while others may offer you the option of "credit" or debit/ATM when processing your purchase.

  • Usually, if you select "credit," you will sign a receipt to authorize your purchase, and if you select "debit/ATM," you will use your PIN to complete the transaction.
  • Whether you select "credit" or "debit/ATM," the purchase amount will be deducted from your City National checking account.

When is a check card purchase deducted from my checking account?
That depends on whether you authorized the transaction via your PIN or your signature. Here's how it works:

  • With PIN purchases, the amount is deducted immediately from the available balance and the transaction details appear on your account the next business day.
  • With signature, online and phone transactions, the funds are held immediately (so they're not available for withdrawal), and the transaction details typically appear in your account within three business days.

How do I track check card purchases?
Each purchase is detailed within Online Banking and in your monthly bank checking statement. Signature purchases are identified as "Ck Card" and PIN purchases are identified as "POS." Both authorization methods show the amount spent, the date and the merchant.

Can I use my check card to pay bills?
Yes, if your merchant accepts check cards for payment. Contact your merchant and tell them you want to set up automatic bill payment and give them your check card number.

With automatic bill payment, Visa takes care of all the details for you. Once you sign up for automatic bill payment and schedule recurring payments, your bills are paid automatically on the schedule you specify, allowing you to simply review the payments on your checking statement. Use automatic bill payment if you want to make payments automatically on specific dates.

How do I activate my check card?
To activate your check card, just use your card with your current PIN or the PIN that is mailed to you when you first sign up for your card at any City National Bank ATM or any ATM with the STAR and/or Plus logo and your card will be activated automatically. Additionally, you can activate your card over the CNB Voice Response Unit by dialing (800) 895-3497 or by visiting a City National Bank branch.
