Ronald L. Olson is a partner with Munger, Tolles & Olson, L.L.P., one of the largest law firms based in Los Angeles. He has practiced with the firm since 1968, and specializes in litigation and corporate counseling, advising individual executives and boards of directors in a range of matters, including corporate governance and transactions.
Recently, Mr. Olson has been the lead partner in the firm’s representation of the board of trustees of the Getty Trust in connection with corporate governance and foreign government claims to its antiquities collection; Shell Oil Company in its 2006 U.S. Supreme Court victory (Dagher v. Shell Oil Company, et al.); pending criminal and SEC investigations and civil lawsuits involving the use of finite insurance within the re-insurance industry and the use of stock options by several public companies; and corporate transactions, including the successful tender for the acquisition of a publicly traded company.
In 1967, Mr. Olson was an attorney for the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice and in 1968 clerked for Chief Judge David L. Bazelon, United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. He formerly was chairman of the Standing Committee on Federal Judiciary (1991-1992), the Litigation Section (1981-1982) and the Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee (1976-1986) of the American Bar Association; and served as vice president of the board of governors of the State Bar of California (1986-1987). He was chairman of the board of trustees of Claremont University Center and Graduate School from 1984 to 1994, the USC Annenberg School for Communication from 1997 to 2001, the board of trustees for the RAND Corporation from 2001 to 2004, and the board of directors for Southern California Public Radio (KPCC – 89.3 FM) from 1999 to 2003.
Mr. Olson received his bachelor’s degree from Drake University in 1963, his juris doctor degree from the University of Michigan in 1966, and a diploma in law from Oxford University, England, in 1967, at which time he was the recipient of a Ford Foundation fellowship.
Several awards have been given to Mr. Olson for public service and pro bono activities.
He is a director of City National Corporation, Berkshire Hathaway, Edison International, The Washington Post Company and Western Asset Income Trusts, as well as several non-profits, including the Council on Foreign Relations, Mayo Clinic and RAND Corporation.
Mr. Olson is a member of the American Bar Association, the American College of Trial Lawyers and the American Law Institute. He currently serves the state of California as co-chair of the Commission on Jobs & Economic Growth and as a member of the Council of Economic Advisors.
